Saskatchewan premier Roy Romanow is expected to shuffle his cabinet in September, making what will likely be the last changes before an election next year.
Last week labor minister Bob Mitchell announced he was resigning from cabinet and would not run in the next election. Earlier this summer provincial secretary Ned Shillington said he would not seek re-election.
Mitchell told reporters he expected the next general election in 1999 and that is why he made his plans public now.
The Saskatoon Fairview MLA was first elected in 1986 and served in several portfolios including justice, post-secondary education and Indian and Metis affairs.
As justice minister he was criticized for not calling inquiries into several high profile cases, including the Robert Latimer trial, the conviction of David Milgaard and the investigation of alleged sexual abuse in Martensville. He was also sued by provincial court judges after he refused to grant them pay increases.
Romanow said the resignations made a shuffle necessary, and he would like to do that before a cabinet retreat in the third week in September.
