MOSCOW, (Reuters) – SovEcon, one of the leading agriculture consultancies in Moscow, said it expects Russia’s 2020 grain crop to rise by 8.6 million tonnes from last year to 129.8 million tonnes.
Russia is the world’s largest wheat exporter, supplying it mainly to the Middle East, Africa and Asia. Its grain crop has become more stable in recent years due to improved technology and larger sowing area, but still depends on weather conditions.
“The main risk for the new crop, which we see at this stage, is the lack of moisture (in soil) in southern regions,” SovEcon said in a note. Russia’s south is the country’s main wheat producing and exporting region.
The consultancy expects Russia’s wheat crop to reach 84.4 million tonnes in 2020, up 9.9 million tonnes from 2019, it added.
