Farmers dragging wide farm implements around a field sometimes think they need eyes in the backs of their heads.
Now a new product called Camtrak allows equipment operators to watch the world behind them without getting a sore neck from twisting around.
Small video cameras mounted on field implements give operators a forward view from the machine’s perspective, day or night. Producers can set cameras to watch for implement plugging or any other function that must be monitored from the cab.
A four-inch color monitor provides the view for the producer.

Canada’s plant hardiness zones receive update
The latest update to Canada’s plant hardiness zones and plant hardiness maps was released this summer.
“The cameras make it possible to see a seed row or wheel track clearly,” said Blaine Linn, of Excel Innovations Inc., of Martensville, Sask.
Two years in development, the system consists of two cameras, a monitor and control, and the connectors needed for installation.
The slim monitor, which contains camera switching and power supply, mounts in the tractor cab and is about the size of a small implement control panel. Up to four cameras can be operated from one monitor.
“We have some that are being used for calving barn monitors in the off-season. They can be mounted up to 300 metres away using long cables,” said Tracy Gardner, of Excel.
The company says 50 units have been sold in its first season of marketing the product.
The system is priced at $5,995 for a four-inch monitor and two-camera system or $6,695 for a 6.4 inch monitor.
