Central Saskatchewan horse enthusiasts want to get their region back in the saddle.
Major horse events have been bypassing Saskatoon because there are no indoor facilities for shows, says Saskatchewan Equine Promotional Group member Perry
Barber.
“People come to these from all across the Prairies,” Barber said. “The miles and the expense is just enormous. An indoor facility is a must.”
This spring the Saskatoon Prairieland Exhibition is letting horse associations use one of its buildings to put on a number of shows. There is a youth horse show and a 4-H equestrian camp in late May, and a national circuit cutting horse show and cattle penning competition in early June.
Barber said Saskatoon-area horse enthusiasts are happy they have a temporary indoor facility, but they hope to convince the exhibition association to commit to building a multi-use livestock facility in the next few years.
Until a few years ago Saskatoon horse shows were held in the Prairieland stadium.
But since that was shut down, horse shows have been without a permanent home, Barber said.
