Soil health

The Oct. 29 issue of The Western Producer had a few articles concerned about how the world was going to feed an extra 2.3 billion people in the year 2050.

The answer in all the articles was to develop GM crops resistant to disease, drought, salinity, heat and toxic heavy metals.

If these people were indeed experts, they would identify disease, insects, drought, etc. as symptoms, not problems. The intensive production methods promoted through the green revolution have created the symptoms because of its focus on plant production instead of soil health.

The degradation of the soil is the problem behind these symptoms. Bringing health back to the soil will alleviate the symptoms, and bring healthy food to world’s population.

We must face the fact (that) we cannot have infinite growth on our finite world. If the earth can’t support another 2.3 billion people, it won’t.
