Grant Devine will be a candidate in the federal riding of Souris Moose Mountain after all.

The former Saskatchewan Progressive Conservative premier announced May 7 he will run as an independent in the next federal election.

He told supporters that was his only option.

In February, the new Conservative party rejected his application to seek its nomination. Estevan, Sask., lawyer Ed Komarnicki later won that contest.

Devine said as an MP he would speak up for Western Canada and for agriculture. The 59 year old has a doctorate degree in agricultural economics and has been ranching, consulting and involved in business since leaving provincial politics in 1995.
