Environmental award

Sask. ranch recognized

Circle Y Ranch, operated by Michael and Tamela Burgess and family in the Big Muddy near Big Beaver, Sask., is Saskatchewan’s TESA winner for 2014.

The Environmental Stewardship Award recognizes families for their land stewardship. They received the award at the Saskatchewan Stock Growers annual meeting.

This is the 20th year the award has been presented. The national winner will be recognized this summer.

U of S specialist to study forages

RCMP have charged a 51-year-old Weyburn man after an altercation at the Pioneer elevator at Corinne, Sask. July 22.

Bill Biligetu has been named forage research chair at the University of Saskatchewan. The specialist in perennial forage breeding and management is the first to fill the chair since its creation was announced.

Saskatchewan agriculture minister Lyle Stewart told the SSGA that Biligetu is “tasked with developing knowledge of forage and exploring and assessing new technologies that will increase the economic advantage to our producers.”

New president

Gillespie takes charge at Stock Growers

Doug Gillespie of Neville was elected president of the SSGA.

He takes over from Harold Martens, who served a three-year term.

Shane Jahnke of Gouldtown is first vice-president and Bill Huber from Lipton is second vice-president. Helen Finucane of Regina will serve as finance chair.

Elected to two-year terms as members at large were: Keith Day, Gerry Duckworth, Gillespie, Tom Grieve, Dave Hoeft and Norm Nordgulen. Jason Pollock will serve a one-year term.

Fee increase

SSGA life memberships rise to $2,500

SSGA members voted to increase life memberships from $1,000 to $2,500. The fee had been in place for 20 years.

Another resolution called on the SSGA to establish a $5,000 reward fund to pay for information leading to the arrest and conviction of anyone stealing livestock from SSGA members.

Leadership program

Young producers named to new program

MOOSE JAW, Sask. —The first recipients of the SSGA youth leadership and mentorship program were announced last week: Brad Howe from Leader, Karl Siemens from Lucky Lake, Kimberly Simpson from Kyle, Jeff Yorga of Flintoft and Brandon Reimer of Carrot River.
