An eighth Ontario farm is reported to be infected with the porcine epidemic diarrhea virus, according to information provided by Ontario Agriculture.
A farrow to finish operation in Wellington County is the latest to report the disease. It is the first to be identified in that particular county, which is northwest of Kitchener.
There are now two infected wean to finish operations in Chatham-Kent and one wean to finish in Simcoe County. There is one farrow to finish operation in each of the Middlesex, Norfolk, Elgin, Perth and Wellington counties that have reported the disease.
PED is usually fatal to young piglets. Older animals can develop immunity so mortality rates drop.
The virus is spread orally through feces. It does not affect other animals and does not present a health risk to people.
