The April 15 appeals of 18 farmers convicted of illegally taking grain across the border have been adjourned again, despite the judge’s promise last fall that wouldn’t happen.

Queen’s Bench chief justice Frank Gerein adjourned the cases because a lawyer has agreed to help some of the farmers apply to submit new evidence and help others with their appeals.

Last fall he said the cases wouldn’t be adjourned again unless someone died.

The farmers were charged after border runs in 1996.

The application for new evidence will be heard Sept. 2, and the appeals will proceed in October.
