Seeding nears completion in Sask.

Seeding in Saskatchewan will likely be complete by the end of this week.

The provincial crop report says 96 percent of the crop was in the ground as of Monday. The southeast was at 93 percent while all other regions had seeded 97 percent.

Progress is well above the five-year average of 89 percent.

Some regions saw significant rainfall. The Kinistino area received the most at 93 millimetres.

Topsoil conditions remain good. On cropland, topsoil moisture is rated 84 percent adequate, 10 percent surplus and six percent short. On hay and pasture, moisture is considered 86 percent adequate, four percent surplus and 10 percent short.

Rain is forecast for today and Friday over much of the agricultural area.

That could hamper spraying operations, depending on crop progress.

Most fall cereals are tillering or at the jointed stage and spring cereals are emerging to tillering.

Most pulse crops have emerged and are in the vegetative stage, while flax is still emerging. Canola and mustard are either emerging or at the seedling stage.

Farmers report damage from localized flooding, frost and insects such as flea beetles, cutworms and pea leaf weevil.
