The Saskatchewan government intends to modernize the Provincial Lands Act, which hasn’t been updated since 1978.

Three public meetings will be held in Regina July 8, Prince Albert July 10 and Saskatoon July 11 to obtain input from stakeholders.

The act applies to provincial crown lands operated by both the agriculture and environment ministries.

At this point, the government says it doesn’t expect any changes will affect existing agreements.

It wants to clarify language in the act, identify solutions for land-use conflicts, develop enforcement mechanisms and strengthen the regulatory framework of the act. The changes are intended to make the act more flexible to meet clients’ needs, the government says.

A discussion paper is available at www.agriculture.gov.sk.ca/PLA.

Comments are to be submitted by July 26.
