Three pregnant cows were shot on a ranch near Stavely, Alta., on March 24 in what appeared to be a random crime spree that also saw damage to gates and lights at the Claresholm, Alta., airport.

The three cows, which survived with serious injuries, belong to Dana Fancy. One of them has calved since the shooting and all three are being monitored.

Claresholm RCMP are investigating.

“It was all kind of along this one range road north of Claresholm,” said const. Dillon Rochon of the Claresholm RCMP.

“It’s not a typical call for us to get. It’s really strange to deal with this, but we’ll deal with it the best we can. We’re treating this very seriously, so we’d like to catch anyone who was involved.”

The culprit or culprits also shot the windows from a pickup truck on the Hart ranch in the same region.

Owner Andy Hart was angry at the damage but relieved that shots were not fired at a fifth-wheel trailer parked near the pickup truck, because his daughter and a friend were sleeping inside.

Fancy found beer cans and shotgun shells in the field where his cows were shot, leading him to speculate the incident was a random and alcohol-induced act.

RCMP are asking anyone with information on the incident to contact the detachment or call Crimestoppers.
