A partnership between a Calgary company and a gas plant operator is expected to result in a new sulphur fertilizer plant near Rocky Mountain House, Alta.

In a news release, Sulvaris Inc. announced today an agreement with Keyera Partnership, with operates the Strachan Gas Plant in central Alberta. The proposed new plant will be a 50-50 venture between the two parties and is expected to produce up to 217,000 tonnes of sulphur fertilizer for Canadian, American and Asian markets.

“With the Vitasul product, we are helping to address plant nutrient sulphur requirements in global agriculture”, said Sulvaris chief executive officer Rick Knoll, in the release.

The fertilizer, Vitasul, is derived from elemental sulfur extracted from natural gas. Sulvaris will market production from the new plant, according to the news release.

Plant construction will depend on regulatory approvals and financing arrangements, but Sulvaris said it plans to start construction this year for a production start in early 2014.

Vitasul is a fertilizer designed for quick response and consistent feeding of sulphate to crops during the growing season.
