Rains recharge groundwater

Farmers in Western Canada can breathe a sigh of relief. Rain across most of the Prairies this spring has helped recharge groundwater and lowered drought risk across the region. “We had an extremely warm winter with lower than normal precipitation in most areas,” said Trevor Hadwen, agroclimate specialist for Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. “We were […] Read more

Southern Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba have all seen considerable amounts of precipitation the last couple of weeks. That should give a head start to the crops. However, many of those regions are extremely dry in the subsoil, and don't have the reserves to withstand long periods without precipitation or with long, hot periods throughout the summer. | File photo

Recent precipitation welcome, but more needed

Northern Alberta is particularly dry this spring, but even areas that are receiving rain have low soil moisture reserves

Glacier FarmMedia – Even though all three Prairie provinces had snow or rain last winter and this spring, moving out of drought conditions is not necessarily a given. “We’ve seen near normal precipitation throughout most of Saskatchewan and well as southern Alberta and much of Manitoba,” said Trevor Hadwen, agroclimate specialist with Agriculture Canada. One way to cope with a moisture shortage is to set a canola seeding rate that results in five to eight plants per sq. foot. The lower end of the range may be appropriate in dry conditions, but don’t risk a thin stand. | File photo

Farmers aim for higher yields with less moisture

Trevor Hadwen says recent snowfall in many parts of the Prairies is welcome but is a “drop in the bucket” when it comes to rebuilding soil moisture reserves. The agroclimate specialist with Agriculture Canada’s National Agroclimate Information Service in Regina says a lot of the winter precipitation to date has been lost to the atmosphere. […] Read more

Drought conditions worsen

SASKATOON — Drought maps show the Canadian prairie region is in far worse shape than it was a year ago heading into spring. There was extreme to exceptional drought in much of west-central Saskatchewan and east-central Alberta as of the end of February. An agroclimate specialist with Agriculture Canada says droughts are the costliest natural disasters because they can affect industries, health, tourism, transportation, energy and forestry sectors in addition to agriculture. | File photo

Need for rain, snow pervades much of Canada

Unless significant precipitation reaches the West in coming weeks, the impacts could stretch beyond agriculture

MEDICINE HAT — Dry conditions stretch across the Prairies and beyond, with nearly half the country experiencing moderate to exceptional drought. It’s the culmination of several dry years across the Prairies. Pockets along the Alberta-Saskatchewan border face exceptional drought conditions as the growing season approaches. Trevor Hadwen, agroclimate specialist with Agriculture Canada, said the impact […] Read more
