Scout for fungal diseases in the fall

Harvest is a good time for producers to see how much sclerotinia slipped through the control cracks during the season

Glacier FarmMedia – Canola growers can evaluate levels of sclerotinia in their fields when it’s time to swath the crop, and the Canola Council of Canada says that’s the ideal time to scout. Sclerotinia is typically one of the top canola diseases on the Prairies, although disease surveys found few infections in Manitoba last year. […] Read more

Wet conditions stoke sclerotinia fears

The Canola Council of Canada said split fungicide applications will protect canola longer if the bloom period is delayed

Glacier FarmMedia – Manitoba canola producers are hoping this season will echo last year’s scarcity of sclerotinia, but recent wet conditions may have laid groundwork for the fungus to return. Dry weather last year tamped sclerotinia. The yearly disease survey found that, of 129 surveyed fields, only 13 per cent showed signs of the disease. […] Read more

Durable sclerotinia resistance built into canola

Trait development company uses gene editing in its quest to reduce or eliminate the need for fungicides to control disease

One challenge in producing disease-resistant canola is to make that resistance last, said Peter Beetham. “One of the problems that plant breeders have always had when it comes to resistance is understanding how you bring about durable disease resistance,” he said. “Durable is a really key term because durability comes from a plant having multiple […] Read more
