Farmers are increasingly challenged to provide their crops with enough fertilizer to maximize yields but not so much that it will be lost to the environment. While strides have been made in application and use efficiency, weather, soil health, application constraints and other factors continue to affect fertilizer longevity and effectiveness.

Anuvia offers its line of SymTRX® fertility products as a solution.

The Florida-based company recently introduced SymTRX 10S to Western Canada. It says the product has shown promise in a wide range of field conditions and soil types across North America, including both irrigated and non-irrigated broad acreage systems.

SymTRX 10S is an enhanced-efficiency, multi-nutrient dry granular fertilizer containing 14 per cent nitrogen, 24 per cent phosphorus, 10 per cent sulphur, and 15 per cent organic matter — the latter derived feedstocks such as manure, food waste, and municipal solids.

Delayed release

The product can be applied broadcast, banded or in-furrow at seeding, and is compatible with all dry-fertilizer application equipment. It was developed by breaking down organic compounds to the amino acid level, providing docking sites for nutrient ions. Nutrients are released as the organic medium breaks down. The result is a product which releases 65 per cent of nitrogen in the first two weeks after application, then continues delivering the remaining nutrient load over six to eight weeks as the organic compound breaks down.

Anuvia chief commercial officer Hugh MacGillivray says SymTRX provides several benefits, including greater nutrient-use efficiency. The organic matter content within SymTRX, supports soil regeneration and less nutrients are lost into the environment.

“Our product has a soil amendment built right into it. We not only feed the plant, we feed the entire soil system, helping nutrient cycling and availability,” says MacGillivray. “It also generates less fertilizer loss and less greenhouse gas emissions. In the end, it’s performance, more bushels per unit of nutrition, healthier soil and a smaller environmental impact.”

Anuvia’s SVP for Canada Norm Davy highlights how the product stimulates native microbes to more quickly colonize the soil and mineralize nutrients.

“You’re applying it at planting with the seed, when the native microbes are starving for a meal. If those microbes are just sitting there because they don’t have a food source, they’re not doing anything. We provide that food source to build that symbiotic relationship.”

Wet and dry results

Davy says research by Anuvia, as well as by partnering university and private research colleagues, shows a significant return on investment for both irrigated and non-irrigated crops. Irrigated canola trials conducted at Lethbridge, Alta. were particularly significant, bringing a 10-to-one return on investment.

While drought conditions pose more of a challenge, Davy says research data indicates a three-to-one return on investment can be expected. He adds SymTRX 10S was also developed for optimal seedling safety.

“We’ve shown very high seedling safety compared to some others. Not damaging anything at planting is a big consideration.”

Both MacGillivray and Davy reiterate the slow-release capability of SymTRX supports the drive towards 4R Nutrient Stewardship initiative — the Right fertilizer source, at the Right rate, the Right time, with the Right placement.

“For me, the number one thing it solves is efficiency,” says Davy. “It’s a homogeneous nutrient product where nutrients are not going to be lost to the environment. And the nutrients are getting to the crop when it really needs it.”

Davy says growers can access Anuvia products from their local independent fertilizer retails, Federated Coops retails and Nutrien Ag Solution retails. For more information visit www.anuviaplantnutrients.com
