The Nexera trait produces an Omega 9 oil profile with increased monosaturated fats and reduced linoleic acid, a desired characteristic for global food preparation and snack foods markets.

Growing Brevant® seeds Nexera® canola offers Prairie farmers access to high-performing varieties and a premium for producing high-stability Omega-9 oil. It’s a combination developed with growers’ success in mind.

“The Nexera grower is a business-minded farmer who chooses to grow under contract in order to secure a profit advantage,” says Tyler Groeneveld, commercial director of North American grains and oilseeds with Corteva. “These growers trust the innovative portfolio of performance traits, valued crop protection solutions and leading seed brands under Corteva Agriscience.”

“A savvy marketer is always thinking about the future needs of the farm and with Nexera canola they can choose future delivery windows that will meet their cash flow needs.”

Blake Gamroth, Corteva

The Nexera trait is offered exclusively through Brevant seeds under contract to provide farmers with access to growing global markets for sustainable, high-value, high-stability oil. Nexera canola offers five distinct advantages that set it apart and help increase the value proposition for growers.

  1. The Nexera Trait Profit Advantage. The Nexera trait exclusive to Brevant seeds canola hybrids helps growers expand their marketing options and profit potential by giving them secure access to premium markets. Independent, third-party market data has verified that Brevant seeds Nexera canola hybrids are the most profitable canola for western Canadian farmers. But the trait also allows growers to produce high-yielding canola to meet production demands.

“The Brevant seeds Nexera canola has everything a modern canola grower is looking for,” says Blake Gamroth, grains and oil channel manager with Corteva. “It has clubroot protection, a complete yield offering, sclerotinia protection and built-in harvest options. It has all the underlying traits that make it a competitive hybrid supporting the Omega-9 trait which is the shining star in Nexera canola.”
  1. Marketing Flexibility Advantage. A Nexera production contract provides a different mechanism for growers to price their canola. The flexibility of a Nexera production contract allows growers to tailor cash flow needs by giving them the option to choose pricing timing and delivery periods.

“Your flexibility comes with the options associated with a Nexera production contract,” says Gamroth. “A savvy marketer is always thinking about the future needs of the farm and with Nexera canola they can choose future delivery windows that will meet their cash flow needs..”.”
  1. The Heat Advantage™. This program is a financial backstop against one of the big uncertainties in farming — the weather. It’s a parametric insurance policy that provides up to $100 per acre of protection in the event of excess heat resulting in heat blast during the flowering stage of canola development.

“The Heat Advantage gives the grower protection over excessive heat at the critical flowering period,” says Groeneveld. “Again, for the business-minded grower, this is an easy decision, the coverage is built in the bag and it’s triggered automatically based on heat units in the crop.”

Heat blast occurs when the daytime temperatures rise above 28 to 30 C during the day, stressing the plant and stopping reproduction and pod development. The data-driven process uses third-party temperature data recorded daily, evaluating more than 7,500 measurement points for accuracy. Once a crop has collected an excess of Heat Blast Units detailed in the policy coverage, payments are made directly to the farmer.
  1. The Brevant seeds Nexera canola Hybrid Advantage. Brevant seeds Nexera canola hybrids come with disease resistance traits, and harvest options, with a choice of herbicide tolerance system. While in the past, growers have been able to use both the Clearfield and Roundup Ready systems, new for 2023 growers will now have a LibertyLink option.

“All Brevant seeds hybrids have built-in protection against key diseases that impact canola growers on the Canadian Prairies,” says Gamroth. “Now, no matter what herbicide-tolerant system works best in your rotation, we have options that will fit your farm, which is critical in helping manage against weed resistance.
  1. The Nexera Trait Health Advantage. The Nexera trait produces an Omega 9 oil profile with increased monosaturated fats and reduced linoleic acid, a desired characteristic for global food preparation and snack foods markets. It’s helping to transform the global food industry with healthier and more sustainable ingredients. Nexera growers partner with grain companies that buy and process their canola to the specifications of food industry customers.

“Canola oil produced with Nexera canola is unique, it’s a very shelf-stable oil that is in high demand,” says Groeneveld. “It’s healthier than tropical oils such as palm that also have high stability properties, and it is grown under practices that fall in line with sustainable production methods in demand by end-users. It is popular in the food industry as it lasts better in a fryer and works well in packaged food.”
Tyler Groeneveld

Groeneveld says Corteva expects strong market demand for Nexera canola and that their production contracts continue to be sought by growers. “Commodity canola growers are choosing to add Nexera canola to their operation to diversify risk and to maximize market potential,” he says. “When you look at the advantages to their business, Nexera canola is a high-performing crop that makes a canola operation more profitable.”
