As Western Canada’s leading cover crop educators and forage seed suppliers, Covers & Co. is on a mission to help farmers implement the principles of soil health into their operations to improve farm profitability and support the small communities we call home. “We’re trying to help farmers and ranchers reduce input costs, such as fertilizer and chemicals, and to do that, we have to focus on shifting our mindset. After five years of research and trials across Western Canada, we have established a lineup of annual and perennial blends to help farmers along this path,” said Travis Avery, co-founder of Covers & Co.
“Our team takes great pride in supporting the rural farming communities, so when Joseph Gardiner, co-founder of Covers & Co., approached our team with the bold fundraising idea, we embraced it,” he says.
The Field of Dreams fundraiser was held in the town of Clearwater, Man., on September 7, 2024. They replicated the beloved movie with a twist and turned a corn/bean intercrop field into a baseball diamond to host a tournament to raise funds for their community. They raised over $60,000 for the Clearwater Foundation and showed the power of small-town spirit. “I think the coolest part about this was the awareness created around the Clearwater Community Foundation and the ripple effect we started with our fundraising event,” Avery says.
Avery’s main message was to challenge other agricultural businesses to find their own Field of Dreams and help invest in the future of our rural communities across Western Canada. Field of Dreams wasn’t just about baseball; it was about community, connection and giving back. “Now, it’s your turn. Can your business create an event that changes your community? Let’s raise the bar and show what’s possible when we invest in the places we call home,” says Avery.
