Morris develops seeding system

Variable rate seeding technology will soon be available from Saskatchewan farm equipment manufacturer Morris Industries.

The new system, the first of its type built by a western Canadian manufacturer, allows the operator on-the-go cab control over the rate of application for three separate products from triple tank air seeder carts.

The system can be integrated with global positioning systems provided by other manufacturers or operated as a stand-alone manual unit.

Final testing will occur in seven locations across the Prairies this spring and the company hopes to have the equipment available to producers in time for fall seeding of winter wheat crops in the United States.

Swine flu vaccine

A vaccine has been approved for use in protecting herds against swine influenza in Canada.

MaxiVac-Flu, distributed by Mallinckrodt Veterinary, Inc. of Ontario and available only from veterinarians, has been available in the United States since 1994.

Swine flu was first recorded in 1918. It is a mild respiratory disease that appears suddenly and spreads quickly through a herd. Affected animals develop high fever, go off feed, have trouble breathing and often exhibit a discharge from eyes or nose.

Mortality rates are low, but productivity is often hampered when simple infections open the door to secondary infections and viruses causing reproductive problems.
