Six-door truck

A six-door pick-up truck conversion from the Stretch Truck Co. in Denver has expanded the definition of stretch cab by 50 percent.

The conversion, based on a truck supplied by the customer, adds about 500 pounds to the truck. Most of that weight is the frame extension.

While it looks like something wealthy Hollywood stars would drive, the numbers might make sense for a farmer who needs to transport people. With the modification, a crew cab becomes a nine passenger truck and a full-sized sport utility vehicle becomes an 11 passenger vehicle.

Geothermal system

Econar GeoSource heat pumps by Deck’s Geo-Electrical Ltd. use underground geothermal energy to heat houses and farm buildings.

Geothermal is an environmentally friendly option to conventional heating systems that use natural gas, oil, wood and electricity.

Geothermal systems heat and cool buildings using the same mechanical system, thereby eliminating the need to install two separate systems.

The systems are custom sized to meet individual heating requirements and can be installed with forced air, hydronic and domestic hot water distribution systems.

Government grants may be available. Payback time is eight to 10 years.

Chemical for fruit and vegetable growers

The Pest Management Regulatory Agency has approved Dow AgroSciences’ Delegate WG insecticide for use by Canadian fruit and vegetable growers.

The Group 5 chemical’s novel mode of action is designed to minimize environmental damage, reduce losses of beneficial insects and allow lower application rates.

Delegate’s active ingredient, Spinetoram, is derived from a fermentation process. After fermentation, the active ingredient is chemically modified.

PMRA has classified Delegate as a reduced risk pesticide because of its unique origin. No other class of insect control products – organophosphates, carbamates, pyrethroids or neonicitinoids – affects the insect’s nervous system with the same mode of action.

Delegate controls 12 destructive pests found in fruit and vegetable crops, including codling moths, oriental fruit moths, leafrollers, leafminers, diamondback moths, cabbage loopers, thrips and armyworms.

In field trials with key crops, researchers found Delegate has low impact on populations of beneficial predatory insects, including big-eyed bugs, damsel bugs, ladybugs and lacewings.
