Computer tool offers precision

John Deere’s GreenStar 2 system is designed to assist growers to become more efficient in their farm operations.

“The system includes the GreenStar Display 2100 or 2600, enhanced software options, and new guidance-system packages to help bring more productivity to the grower,” said Gordon Culp from John Deere.

The GSD 2100 and 2600 feature full-colour screens that allow the operator to configure and simultaneously view several applications for farms, fields or tasks. Setup and data entry is with an on-screen keyboard or optional external USB keyboard.

VIDEO: Green Lightning and Nytro Ag win sustainability innovation award

Nytro Ag Corp and Green Lightning recieved an innovation award at Ag in Motion 2025 for the Green Lightning Nitrogen Machine, which converts atmospheric nitrogen into a plant-usable form.

“A compact flash card inserted into the display records and stores large amounts of data,” said Culp. “The information can then be easily transferred between the display and GreenStar Apex, new farm management software introduced by John Deere.”

Both the GSD 2100 and 2600 have the same capabilities for software applications, but there are differences between the two units. The GSD 2100 is smaller with a diagonal measurement of 8.4 inches. A display controller, which can be mounted next to the display, above the right hand console, or on the tractor CommandArm, is used to navigate the screens.

The GSD 2600 measures 10.4 inches diagonally and features the latest in touch-screen technology. The display is easy to read, even in direct sunlight, and can be ordered with an optional display controller.

New software modules are available and designed specifically for the GS2 system. GreenStar Basics is installed on every GreenStar display. It offers familiar applications such as Parallel Tracking, documentation and map-based prescriptions, an aerial view perspective to help guide the machine.

“Enhanced visuals have been added to improve navigation and performance, including path accuracy indicators, colour-coded maps, aerial views of equipment in the field, and headland boundaries that come into view as you approach the end of a pass,” Culp said.

A new GreenStar 2 AutoTrac Pro Module is available with more features on the GSD2 displays, including a perspective view and visibility of the headlands for hands-free equipment operation at the push of a button. One feature allows engagement of the system on curved passes.

“For growers who farm with irrigation pivots, GreenStar 2 PivotPro is now available to help navigate circular field plots,” Culp added. “Operators will be able to use satellite guidance to reduce overlap in circular fields and to increase operator comfort by reducing constant steering adjustments.”

Tank mixture kills weeds

Express Toss-N-Go tank-mixed with Roundup WeatherMAX gives growers with hard-to-kill perennial weeds a new option for post-harvest burnoff.

The tank mix controls a variety of hard-to control weeds including dandelions, flixweed, narrow-leaved hawk’s-beard and volunteer Roundup Ready canola.

Weeds like dandelion, narrow-leaved hawk’s beard, flixweed and stinkweed are easier to control in the fall. Recent rains will also stimulate growth of these weeds, increasing herbicide efficacy.

Research suggests that adding Express Toss-N-Go to glyphosate can result in up to 60 percent better dandelion control than with glyphosate alone.

In addition to Roundup WeatherMax, Express Toss-N-Go can also be mixed with Roundup Original, Roundup Transorb, Roundup Dry, Touchdown iq and Touchdown 600.

There are no spring recropping restrictions when the tank mix is applied in the fall. At about $3 per acre, adding Express Toss-N-Go to glyphosate is economical and agronomically sound. The product comes in water-soluble packages that treat 80 acres.
