Computer farming
Farm Works software is offering a special Christmas rate on its Stake Your Acres computer game. The game starts with players inheriting a farm. Floods, drought, disease or swarms of hungry insects may disrupt the operation, but the chance of higher market prices, above-average yields and lower expenses may make this year pay off.
The IBM-compatible software is being sold at $25 (U.S.), including shipping and handling, until Dec. 20. Regular price is $39.95.

Mower-conditioner
The Vermeer RC5120 disc-style mower-conditioner operates at a cutting width of 2.05 metres (six feet, eight inches) and speeds up to 15 km-h are intended for smaller operations. A single direct-drive gearbox provides power to both the cutterbar and conditioning rollers. Three-point, spring-loaded suspension aids flotation, both laterally and vertically and minimizes scalping and missed low spots. An over-running slip clutch provides dependable protection for the tractor and the mower. Modular design reduces maintenance and fluid checks associated with flatbed-style gear systems.
The disc-style cutterbar features a series of independent cutting heads driven by a continuous steel hex shaft. Each cutting head is self-contained with its own set of gears, bearings and lubricant. Five synchronized cutting discs are tapered to lift the cut crop to the conditioning rollers.
The discs also counter-rotate to reduce wrapping problems and promote better crop flow. Side curtains are made of puncture-tested single-ply rubber. Replaceable, reversible swing-away cutting knives are treated to be shatter resistant. Windrow widths are adjustable from 63.5 centimetres to 127 cm. The operator can also use the unit in both the offset position and directly behind the tractor.
