New tractors

Caterpillar has introduced two new tracked tractors featuring larger engines designed for better response and reduced gear shifting.

The Challenger 75D replaces the 74C. It has a 10.3 litre, four-stroke, in-line six cylinder, turbocharged diesel engine. It produces 330 horsepower, five more than the 75C.

The new engine increases torque more quickly, reducing the need to shift gears. It is designed to be more durable thanks to improvements such as larger rod and main bearings.

The 85D model has a 12 litre diesel engine producing up to 370 gross engine horsepower in gears 6-10.

Computer software

Crop Growers Inc. has developed precision mapping and crop management computer software to track detailed information on any farm. It has combined precision mapping with VisAg software.

Maps from Crop Growers are detailed bird’s eye views of the farm. They are color coded by crop or variety and display information on boundaries, roads, rivers, buildings and landmarks. Soil types can also be plotted.

VisAg uses the map as navigator to all planting records, fertilizer and chemical applications, tillage and harvest data.

It also manages employee wages, equipment use and estimated fuel consumption per hour.

High-tech sprayer

Willmar Manufacturing has introduced a new series of high-clearance sprayers that use advanced global positioning systems and site-specific applications technology.

The Ranger 7000 series features the company’s Sentry spray booms in 60, 80 and 90 foot lengths. They feature built-in suspension to reduce stress on the booms and provide a level ride.

The Sector integrated computer system in the cab allows site-specific chemical spraying based on recommendations. It also records chemical use on pinpointed field sites.

Willmar believes it has solved software compatibility problems. Its windows-based software is compatible with Rockwell’s Vision System and other software used by ag retailers.
