Field flamer
Flame Engineering has introduced the Red Dragon alfalfa field flamer. Designed to control alfalfa weevil, weeds and grasses, the flamer uses liquid propane to flash burn at ground level.
The manufacturer says the split second intense heat kills the alfalfa weevil and weeds, without harming the crop.
Flaming is done after harvest or during the dormant season before new growth begins in spring.
The manufacturer says the system is cheaper than chemical controls. Spraying at eight km-h will treat 6.5 acres per hour and use 68-72 litres of propane per acre.

Software upgrade
Tradex AgriSystems has introduced an upgraded version of its Cow Sense herd management software.
It is a record keeping program that runs in Windows or Macintosh systems.
It is available in three modes: lite, commercial and purebred. Buyers pay only for the mode they use.
In purebred mode, ranchers can run a purebred and commercial herd at the same time.
There are five fields to identify each animal, including a 14-digit electronic identification field suitable for the proposed national identification program.
It also provides producers with a way to track individual animal health treatments. Cow Sense will rank individuals, compare groups, examine production history and calculate break-even price.
Users can customize reports to meet individual needs.
