Corn borer resistant

Pioneer Hi-Bred has introduced to Western Canada corn hybrids with resistance to the European corn borer.

Each of the new hybrids has a Bt gene, which the company names YieldGard.

Two varieties will be available in spring 1999 – 39K73 (2150 CHU) and 39J69 (2250 CHU).

They offer high resistance to the European corn borer and moderate resistance to corn earworm, fall armyworm and common stalk borer.

The built-in insect resistance provides season-long protection from the European corn borer, but does not harm beneficial insects.

Nytro Ag Corp and Green Lightning recieved an innovation award at Ag in Motion 2025 for the Green Lightning Nitrogen Machine, which converts atmospheric nitrogen into a plant-usable form.

Agriculture Canada requires that companies selling this technology establish management strategies to avoid the buildup of insects with resistance to the Bt gene.

Growers using the hybrids with YieldGard are required to plant a refuge of non-Bt corn.

New seed inoculant

Philom Bios has introduced a new phosphate seed inoculant called Jump Start.

The product has been shown to promote higher yields in low to medium soil phosphate conditions.

The product is designed to improve phosphate nutrition, creating the right conditions for early crop vigor.

Sanford Gleddie of Philom Bios said the company helps farmers evaluate whether the product is right for their conditions.

“Not every field will benefit from Jump Start, but farmers with low to medium phosphate soils have seen very positive results,” he said in a news release.
