Just tarp it

A utility tarp that stands up to use and the elements has been developed by Walk-Winn Co. The Poly-Tec Utility Tarp is suitable for covering machinery, boats and other odd-shaped objects. It is made from UV-stabilized, mildew-resistant material that repels dirt, dust, rain and snow.

Although sturdier than ordinary plastic, it is lightweight and easy to handle. The silver-grey color reflects sunlight and UV rays, preventing heat build-up and condensation under the tarp. The material also allows existing moisture to escape, and its grid pattern and three-ply construction prevent tearing. It comes with nylon rope and tie-downs and is available in six sizes ranging from 5 x 8 feet to 15 x 24 feet. Contact: Phaff Performance, 3027 Unit A New Street, Burlington, Ont. New canola, mustard

Three new varieties of canola and mustard have been registered by the Saskatoon Research Centre. AC-H102 is an Argentine canola that was 13.5 percent higher yielding than the average of check varieties, Western, Legend and Delta. It has blackleg and lodging resistance but is later maturing than either Delta or Legend, making it best for areas with a longer growing season. AC-H102 is distributed by SeCan.

AC Pennant is a yellow mustard that, on average, yielded 11 percent higher than Ochre, the check variety. It has higher yield and is adapted to the Western Canadian prairies. It is distributed through the mustard association, with first seed increases co-ordinated by Alberta Wheat Pool.

AC Vulcan is a new oriental mustard variety that yielded five percent more seed than Cutlass, the check variety. It has early maturity and medium plant height. Lodging resistance is similar to Cutlass, but it has a higher “mustard taste” content and lower fixed oil. It is distributed by the mustard association, with first seed increases co-ordinated by Saskatchewan Wheat Pool. Contact: Carl Lynn, Saskatoon Research Centre, 306-956-7200, fax 306-956-7247.

Heavy-duty cutters

Bush Hog’s new 3200 series cutter is built for tough areas. Rigid strongbacks, deeper band depth, metal shields over drive lines, A-frames and heavy-duty gearboxes are among the features built to increase productivity and reduce maintenance. A steel clevis allows vertical movement of the cutter without binding on the drawbar, and rotates 360 degress to allow use in all terrain. The tongue is designed to be out of the flow of materials entering the front of the cutter. The deck is 10-gauge steel with drain holes and blade pin access holes. Square tubing and double pivot lugs allow wheel spacing for row crop use. Contact: Bush Hog, Box 1039, Selma, Ala. 36701, 205-872-6261.
