New tank mix

Arvesta Canada, Inc. has registered Select and Curtail M herbicides as a tank mix combination.

The combination helps flax growers fight grass weeds and tough broadleaf weeds such as Canada thistle and wild buckwheat.

Flax is a poor competitor to weeds and early weed control is important to ensure the crop produces a vigorous, high yielding plant stand.

Non chemical control

Insecto is a non chemical insecticide that can control insects in stored grain. The active ingredient is marine diatomaceous earth, or DE, which is made from the skeletal remains of plankton.

DE has a sharp surface that causes abrasions on the insect’s outer protective layer. Eventually, moisture is absorbed from the insect’s body causing death by dehydration.

DE is approved for use in animal and human food products in concentrations up to two percent of weight. This is well beyond the rate required to control major grain insects.

To control insects in stored grain, treat empty bins at a rate of one pound per 1,000 sq. feet of floor space using an aeration fan.

In bins without aeration, use the auger to treat the first foot of grain at one lb. per tonne. Then, treat the last two feet of grain at one lb. per tonne and add a top dressing of four lb. per thousand sq. feet of floor space. This will protect stored grain for less than a penny per bushel.

Insecto is distributed at most Canadian farm supply centres including Agricore United and Federated Co-op. For more information, call 800-332-2002 or visit www.insecto.com.
