Balebuster

DuraTech Industries has a new Balebuster for processing straw, grass hay, alfalfa and high moisture silage round bales.

The model 2554 Balebuster is self-loading and can carry two bales at once. It unrolls the bales, and cuts and mixes the hay into a more palatable form.

The high-capacity blower directs the feed to where it is needed. There are several discharge spout options ranging from general use to one designed for use with high wagons and for spreading straw up to 30 metres.

Manual horizontal and vertical controls for the discharge spout are standard. Hydraulic controls are optional. Heavy spring steel flails penetrate dense, wet haylage bales.

Rock picker

DuraTech has a new rock picker that can pick stones from five to 40 centimetres in diameter.

The 3106 Rock-Eze takes a swath three metres wide. The windrower teeth are hard faced to extend life. The box grate in the floor leaves soil in the field instead of in the rock pile. The box screen frame is constructed with four cm heavy wall steel tubing.

The direct-coupled hydraulic motor improves chain box alignment.

The hitch centres the unit directly behind the tractor during road transport.

Conveyor weather protection

New from Ag Growth Industries is the Batco Weather Protector for its series 13, 15 and 2000 grain conveyors.

The Weather Protector is a half round tub mounted to the bottom of the conveyor that covers the belt on its return to the tube.

The company says the device is designed to protect belts from ice and snow buildup in colder climates and from ultra violet light and excessive heat in warmer climates.

It says it has retrofitted older 13 series machines for the Weather Protector, but sells the unit as an option on new equipment.

Hypodermic needle

Schering-Plough Animal Health will market a new line of hypodermic needles that are detectable by metal scanners used by meat processors.

Broken needles are considered a key hazard in the meat industry.

The PDN needles are made by Process Detectable Needles Inc. of Winnipeg. They are made of a type of stainless steel metal alloy that is highly detectable.

The average detectability rate of standard needles is about 10 percent. However, tests run by Canada Pork International and the Canada Pork Council found 100 percent detectability when 20-gauge PDN one-inch and 16-gauge one-inch, half-inch and quarter-inch lengths were used.

The PDN needles also have a polypropylene hub that is reinforced to be stronger than typical plastic hubs.

They bend at the junction of the hub and needle, but if the needle bends, it will break the epoxy bond and the needle will not be usable.

Schering-Plough will initially market the needles in conjunction with swine vaccines, but it also expects the needles to be used extensively in the cattle industry.
