Chickweed herbicide
DuPont Canada has received approval for the registration of Crossfire, a herbicide that controls chickweed and other broadleaf weeds in wheat and barley. Due to limited 1995 supplies, the product will be available in Alberta only.
Crossfire contains the active ingredients metribuzin, found in Lexone and Sencor, and tribenuron methyl, one of the sulfonylureas found in Refine Extra. Crossfire tank-mixed with MCPA amine provides three modes of action and offers better control of chickweed along with greater crop safety than registered metribuzin and MCPA.

Hydraulic pruner
Jonsered Power Products has introduced a lightweight pruner for parks, orchards and fruit farms. The Jonsered HP 36 hydraulic pruner consists of an engine kit that is connected to a telescoping shaft through a pump hose. A 36 cubic centimetre gas engine is connected to a hydraulic pump. A hydraulic hose runs from the pump through the telescoping shaft to a piston that activates the cutter.
The power pack, which weighs 7.4 kilograms, is mounted on a padded backpack frame and harness. The pruner clips branches up to four centimetres in diameter with two cutting attachments; a guillotine blade for thicker branches and a scissorhead for lighter growth. Adjustable shafts are available in two-or four-metre lengths. Safety features include a throttle interlock so the cutter can only be activated when the trigger is engaged correctly.
