Hog housing
Reid Manufacturing’s new Farrownest-Generation Two is designed to
provide more comfort for breeding sows, better protection of piglets
and more efficient use of housing space.
It gives the sow room to turn around.
The shape of the vertical bars provides leaning support to the sow to
make it easier to lay down and reduce the likelihood of crushing
piglets. The horizontal bars are curved like the sow’s back and are
positioned to minimize the chance for squeezing piglets against the

side walls.
The Farrownest requires only one gate, allowing it to be about one foot
shorter than the traditional seven foot crate. However, the space
inside is about 34 percent larger for the laying sow and 80 percent

Heavyweight tractor
Agco Fendt has a new heavyweight tractor for row cropping and livestock
operations.
The Vario 918 weighs nearly nine tonnes and has 160 pto horsepower. The
four-wheel drive has the power and weight to handle big liquid manure
tankers, whether pulling the injectors through the field or stopping
with a full load on a steep road, the company says.
It has a range of tread adjustments from 60 to 88 inches to fit most
row crop applications. There is a stepless, continuously variable
transmission.
Operators can select from two-wheel drive, automatic four-wheel drive
or permanently engaged four-wheel drive. Differential locks can be
released, placed in automatic mode or permanently engaged.
The hydraulic system pumps 30 gallons per minute.
The tractor is also available with a reverse operating station for
tasks such as forage harvesting.
