Herbicide registered
A new herbicide offering farmers another round of ammunition in their fight against resistant weeds has been registered in Canada.
Accord from BASF Canada contains the chemical quinclorac. It is designed to kill green foxtail, cleavers, volunteer flax and barnyard grass in spring wheat and durum.
It is classified as a group 4 product and strikes down weeds in a two-way attack. It hits the weed through the root system, and through contact with leaves where it inhibits photosynthesis and cuts off oxygen.

VIDEO: Green Lightning and Nytro Ag win sustainability innovation award
Nytro Ag Corp and Green Lightning recieved an innovation award at Ag in Motion 2025 for the Green Lightning Nitrogen Machine, which converts atmospheric nitrogen into a plant-usable form.
The compound works most effectively as a post-emergent herbicide when plants are in the one to five leaf growth stage.
Arthur Yochim, of BASF in Regina, said farmers should use the chemical in a three-year rotation on a field to battle weeds that show resistance to other grass or broadleaf herbicides.
“One of the unique things about Accord is that it is active on broadleaf and grasses. A lot of products in the past were active on one but not the other,” he said.
Odyssey registered
Cyanamid has received registration for Odyssey, designed for post-emergent application to control grassy and broadleaf weeds in herbicide resistant Smart canola and all varieties of peas.
Cyanamid said because of its leaf and root activity, the herbicide provides one application control of emerged weeds and subsequent flushes of weeds such as green foxtail, wild mustard and cleavers.
Odyssey is a group two type herbicide. Field peas, spring wheat, durum and Smart canola varieties can be grown safely the year following application in all soil zones.
The product can be used in all tillage systems, including direct seeding, Cyanamid said.
