New vaccine for pigs

Boehringer Ingelheim Ltd. has introduced a new vaccine for PRRS, or porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome.

Agriculture Canada has recently approved Ingelvac RespPRRS Repro, a modified live virus vaccine recommended for use on healthy, susceptible swine to help reduce the disease.

It is the only vaccine approved in Canada for use in non-pregnant sows, gilts and piglets and is indicated for the reproductive and respiratory forms of the PRRS virus.

The company says independent research has shown the vaccine to be effective against more than 29 strains of the PRRS virus.

The vaccine is administered as a single two-millilitre dose in pigs from three to 18 weeks of age for the respiratory form of the disease.

To ward off the reproductive form, the vaccine is administered three-to-four weeks before breeding in sows and gilts.
