When I arrived in the office one morning last week, Farm Living editor Karen Morrison and web editor Paul Yanko were unpacking a large and heavy box.
“Come and see our haul,” Karen said.
Was it Christmas? Someone’s birthday? A fertilizer delivery? No!
They were unpacking plaques that were presented to Western Producer journalists at the Canadian Farm Writers’ Federation awards banquet in Harrison Hot Springs, B.C., Oct. 5. Karen Morrison and Karen Briere, who were in attendance, were exhausted running up to accept them all.

WP staff took awards in five of 14 categories, which we thought was pretty great considering that we are not eligible to enter many of the categories, such as TV news reporting and radio news reporting.
A nice benefit to the writers is that each award comes with some not-insignificant cash: gold earns $300, silver $200;and bronze $100.Â
The Western Producer is also a sponsor of the event. We sponsor the Daily Press Reporting/C.B. Fairbairn award, which seems a sensible category since, until we went daily online, we were a weekly paper. That meant we were seldom in the running for a win in our sponsored category.
I am so proud of our staff, and the award recognition gives me a chance to brag a little bit in public.
I must say, it’s really fun to do so.
