Cloning Nevada

The state of Nevada once had the tradition of being the sin capital of North America, where people went to consort with one-armed bandits or to obtain quickie divorces.

Nevadans did not pay state income taxes thanks to gambling money flowing in from visitors from Saskatoon, Sherwood Park and Stonewall, among thousands of other communities.

After decades of being the target of holier-than-thou abuse from folks from states and provinces that eschewed casinos and the sin they engendered, the people of Nevada must be chuckling. The scramble by governments across North America to reap gambling profits is becoming a stampede.

Praying for rain is being replaced with the hope that rain can stop for harvest. Rainfall in July and early August has been much greater than normal.

Vote-hungry administrations have discovered that it is easy to seduce people into taking a flyer. Opposition parties over the years have done far too good a job making taxes a dirty word. A finance minister who raises taxes is regarded in the same light as someone who beats his mother.

However, if you can induce citizens to line up to buy a chance on $5 million, the government can rake off enough that a tax increase can be avoided or minimized.What is important is that the citizens don’t blame the government.

Hospitals and other useful organizations now are operating their own lotteries to replace funding lost when governments down-sized. Nearly every week there’s a smiling child at the door with tickets to sell.
