Rose Jardine is probably fed up with being told she made a good move in marrying Alan Jardine and becoming gardening columnist for The Western Producer.

Jardin, of course, is the French word for garden or park.

In mid-August we stopped at Oyen, Alta., to see Rose and had an enjoyable chat about things present and things that once were. She was waiting rather impatiently for a telephone call summoning her to Calgary for a knee operation.

She has things to do that involve get up and go, and a gimpy knee is no help.

Late season rainfall creates concern about Prairie crop quality

Praying for rain is being replaced with the hope that rain can stop for harvest. Rainfall in July and early August has been much greater than normal.

For example, the previous week she worked at the Oyen Fair and the local committee insisted she use a wheelchair. After a day on the concrete floor of the fair building she conceded it was a good idea.

Rose reluctantly agreed to ride in the parade and didn’t find out until later that on the other side of the carriage she was riding in was a sign saying: “Rose Jardine, Oyen’s No. 1 Volunteer.”

This was the fair’s 25th anniversary and hence the parade. Rose has been a key organizer of the fair and other community and regional activities for all of those 25 years.

We at the Producer had a disturbing sense of loss years ago when Rose Ducie resigned as one of the senior editors of our newspaper to become the wife of a farm machinery dealer in Oyen and Flaxcombe, Sask., but it is apparent the Big Sky Country certainly benefited from the move.

Now this perky lady is planning to buy a computer so she can do a better job of letting the world know about Oyen and southeast Alberta.

Her mother lived to 107 so the computer should be well used.
