Readers’ e-mail

The first few letters to the editor have begun to trickle in through Internet, and have been published in the last few weeks.

This indicates people are finding useful the redesign of the Producer, especially on page 2 where we have a guide on how to use our services.

We also have on the top of section fronts (Opinion, Production, Markets and Farm Living) the names of the editors and ways to contact them. This includes phone, fax and e-mail addresses.

Editor Garry Fairbairn’s address has been on the front of the Opinion section (page 6) for several months, but the first e-mail letter came after the redesign.

Worrisome drop in grain prices

Prices had been softening for most of the previous month, but heading into the Labour Day long weekend, the price drops were startling.

To send an Open Forum letter through Internet, a writer could send it to fairbairn@producer.com and beat Canada Post by several days.

However, writers should still respect the 300-word limit and include full names, addresses and phone numbers for verification purposes.

Some other publications identify in different ways that they have received their letter by e-mail.

For example, Time magazine writes in italics underneath the letter that it was received by e-mail. Maclean’s magazine uses a symbol of a black dot within a box to signify e-mail.

Our paper isn’t marking these letters in any special way.

Letters come by post or fax, or are sometimes dropped off at our building. Internet is seen as just another way to communicate the information to us.

There are advantages to sending the letters to us by e-mail.

It’s faster and in many cases cheaper; we will have an easier time reading your writing; and we don’t need to retype the words.
