Less than a year old, and already an award winner.
On June 24, at a gala affair in Vancouver, Farming magazine – a supplement of The Western Producer – was named Trade Magazine of the Year by Western Magazine Awards Foundation.
Even more impressive was that it was the first three issues ever published of the magazine that helped earn the award.
The contest rules required three consecutive issues, and at the time that’s all that were published of Farming. The first edition was last October. That only makes the award even sweeter for its editors – Bill Strautman and Ron Lyseng – and its design editor, Dale West.

Rural emergency room closures continue to be vexing problem
Staffing issues are at the root of disruptions and closures in hospital emergency departments, both in rural and urban Canadian locations.
They know since then the magazine has been getting better as editors and freelance writers establish a better understanding of the needs of the publication, graphics and photos grow stronger, production glitches are overcome, and guidelines for copy style have been adopted.
To qualify for the contest, the magazine had to be published in Western Canada and serve a particular profession or industry. Farming magazine provides producers with information they can use to improve their bottom line.
While awards are nice, even more rewarding is the positive feedback the magazine has received from readers.
Another magazine which serves its readers well is Western People, which this week celebrates its 1,000th issue after 21 years of publication.
The Western Magazine Awards Foundation named Western People as a finalist for Magazine of the Year, for Saskatchewan, and feature editor Karen Morrison received two nominations for the Gold Award for Best Article in Saskatchewan.
The nominations were for her Nov. 26 article For crying out loud about Hinton’s town crier, Chris Poole; and her Oct. 29 story A farm accident changed his life profiling Jon Paul Blenke, of Millet, Alta. and how he gets by without arms.
While Western People did not receive any awards, it is still impressive to be considered a finalist in the competition.
Congratulations to both magazines on their achievements.
