The penetrating chill of a northwest wind tells us it’s time to do those things we do to prepare for winter.

We have to dig the sturdier garden vegetables, start up the ice plant at the curling rink, check the cold weather clothing for holes, spider webs or bird’s nests, clean the furnace filter, blow out the sprinkler system, cut wood for the fireplace, fix the starter on the snow blower, call a meeting of the rink committee and round up some nominees for the unit board.

Late season rainfall creates concern about Prairie crop quality

Praying for rain is being replaced with the hope that rain can stop for harvest. Rainfall in July and early August has been much greater than normal.

First nice day we’ll really get into high gear. Or will we?

We’ve been thinking it would be nice to drive down to Watrous and try out the spa. Supposed to be good for achy muscles. Even thinking about all those chores is enough to make muscles ache.

Then we were going to drive along the river and see the fall colors before that north wind blew all the leaves galley-west.

Maybe we’ll save that for Sunday.

We do have that new fishing rod that has only been out of the case once and all it’s caught so far has been three little snakes.

Why buy an angling licence if it isn’t going to be used?

There is also the bird hunting season.

Some of those Canada Geese were so tame this summer you could catch one with a lasso.

It would take a long rope to catch one now they’ve been shot at a few times.

I wonder who borrowed that old shotgun? Best part about bird hunting was the lying we heard in the coffee shop after it was over.

“HAR-LEE. Were you going to dig those carrots?”

“I’ll be right there.”
