XL Beef Ltd. plans to build a $20 million processing plant in Calgary.

Construction is planned to start in the fall for a 1998 opening. XL is one of Canada’s largest meat processors and was the first beef company to develop a branded product, beef from a specific source, with its Original Alberta Beef program.

XL operates three locations in Calgary, which will be consolidated by the new facility.

The company was prompted to expand after its recent deal with Quebec’s largest food marketer, Provigo Inc. The Quebec company agreed to distribute Original Alberta Beef in its stores where sales are targeted at $50 million a year.
