Employees at the smallest of Manitoba’s four main hog processing plants voted last week to end an eight-week strike.
The 115 workers at Jack Forgan Meats returned to work Aug. 29 after voting to accept wage increases of about $1.20 per hour.
Before they went on strike, the company had offered a 42-cent increase.
“Nobody likes a strike,” said Bernard Christophe, president of United Food and Commercial Workers Union local no. 832, in a news release. “But this settlement shows what a strike can accomplish.”
The company will also pay more into the employees’ pension and dental plans.
The increases will be phased in over the next two years.
