PEACE RIVER, Alta. – Women should give themselves an annual booster shot to stay healthy, says a woman specializing in lifestyle management.
Fern Richardson said women know they should eat well, get lots of sleep, do the right amount of exercise, reduce stress and take joy breaks, but they don’t always remember.
“This is nothing new, but because this is a booster shot we have to remind ourselves,” Richardson told a farm women’s conference here recently.
The specialist from Leduc, Alta., said because women end up looking after the kids, their spouse and their aging parents or in-laws, they need to remember to look after themselves.

Recent studies show married men are healthier than single men, but single women are healthier than married women.
It was no surprise to the women in the crowd. “Of course,” they said. “The wives look after the husband.”
The group agreed they knew what they should do, but sometimes let it slide when there was a sick child, or kids to drive to hockey practice or cattle to feed.
They knew they should choose more low-fat foods, eat more vegetables and get more exercise.
“We can always make improvements,” said Richardson.
When she asked how many know they should get 15 minutes of exercise three times a week they all nodded, but in the cold weather some admitted they didn’t always get enough exercise.
“That’s all right,” said Richardson admitting she doesn’t always manage to fit in the recommended amount either, but she told the women to keep trying.
She also reminded them to take joy breaks.
“Do something that you like. When you feel your body beginning to be tight, leave and do something you enjoy.”
She also reminded the women to keep a support network of friends and family they can count on when they need a little help.
“Make sure your friends are the kind of people who are supportive,” she said. Volunteering was another way women can feel good about themselves.
“Get involved. People who volunteer are healthier and happier.”
