At press time the Saskatchewan cabinet had not been announced. But here’s who some farm leaders would like to see get the agriculture portfolio:
- Saskatchewan Wheat Pool president Leroy Larsen would like to see premier Roy Romanow take over the agriculture portfolio himself. Failing that, he wants someone like Dwain Lingenfelter, a high profile NDP MLA with a background in agriculture. Lingenfelter was deputy premier in the former cabinet and operates farms near Regina and Shaunavon, Sask.
“(Romanow) had certainly better give agriculture a better profile in the forthcoming government,” said Larsen.

- Brian Weedon, president of the Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association, thinks Romanow has slim pickings when it comes to appointing an agriculture minister, since few of his MLAs have a rural background.
- Doug Thompson, Saskat-chewan vice-president of the Western Canadian Wheat Growers
Association, agrees with Weedon.
“I guess he’s got to from his caucus decide who has more back-ground in farming than growing a garden.”
- Alfred Wagner, president of the Bengough Rally Group, said, “We’re not really concerned who would be the minister, but what we do need is someone who has got lots of fire and stands up to Ottawa.”
