Alberta

South

  • Seeding is complete. Some limited reseeding of frost damaged canola. Crops are fully emerged.
  • Fall-seeded crops starting to head and in need of moisture.
  • Very dry conditions and near average temperatures returned to the southern foothills.
  • Pastures average but declining.
  • Dry conditions in the irrigation districts.
  • Pea leaf weevil control on some farms near Lethbridge and Vulcan. Flea beetles are still a concern for immature canola.
  • Post-emergent weed control is underway.

Central

  • Crops are emerging.
  • Poor moisture conditions persist with spring-seeded crops failing in some areas.
  • Fall-seeded crops are fair to good but in need of moisture to support heading.
  • One-third of pastures in poor condition, trending toward decline.
  • Drought from Sundre to Calgary, east to Brooks and north to Oyen, also near Rimbey and Rocky Mountain House.
  • Flea beetles being controlled in canola.
  • Herbicide applications underway.

Northwest

  • Reseeding of some frost- and drought- damaged crop. General crop emergence. Crop conditions generally fair to good.
  • Fifty percent of pastures poor and declining. Poor subsoil moisture in most areas.
  • Spraying of flea beetles in early-seeded crops.
  • Post-emergent weed control underway.

Northeast

  • Crop emergence good.
  • Frost damage resulted in reseeding.
  • Fall-seeded crops remain in poor condition and in need of rain.
  • Forage crops are generally in poor to failing condition.
  • Flea beetles being controlled in early-seeded canola.
  • Post-emergent weed control underway.

Peace and B.C.

  • Surface moisture is generally good with excessive moisture north of Grand Prairie.
  • Emerging crop is generally in good condition.
  • Replacement of frost-damaged spring- and fall-seeded crops mostly complete.
  • Pastures in good condition, but delayed in maturity.
  • Flea beetle control in early- seeded crops.

Saskatchewan

Southwest

  • Crop is seeded with emergence generally complete.
  • Pastures behind average, but improving from previous week’s rain and snow.
  • Post-emergent weed control underway.
  • Gopher problems near Assinibioa and Swift Current.
  • Flea beetles widespread. Some adult pea leaf weevil control near Maple Creek.

Southeast

  • Crop emergence good.
  • Early-seeded crops frost damaged, with reseeding and regrowth underway.
  • Moisture is adequate. More than half of spring crops in good condition.
  • Pastures average, but delayed due to cold.
  • Cutworms in a few areas. Flea beetles causing damage.

West-central

  • Rain fell near Conquest and Eston, otherwise drought prevails in the district.
  • Drought serious north of South Saskatchewan River, in the Rosetown, Kindersley area, approaching near record dry. Only 10 percent of topsoil moisture reported as adequate.
  • Pastures in poor condition.
  • Flea beetle damage in some pockets, grasshopper emergence and gophers reported.

East-central

  • Crop generally emerged. Slow development and delayed seeding.
  • Soil moisture 70 percent adequate and declining.
  • Hay land fair to good, but delayed.
  • Flea beetle damage, some spraying underway. Cutworms reported around Yorkton.

Northwest

  • Crop emergence is good with patchiness, however moisture conditions are declining with less than half of topsoil having adequate supplies.
  • Seventy-five percent of pastures are short of moisture and declining in condition.
  • Flea beetle control in early canola. Gophers are present.

Northeast

  • Crop emergence is good.
  • Winter crops rated in good condition. Half of spring crops in good condition but development is well behind average.
  • Frost damage to canola.
  • Pastures in good to fair condition with delayed maturity due to cold weather.

Manitoba

Southwest

  • Crops generally have emerged. Fall rye and winter wheat starting to head.
  • Pasture condition improving.
  • Moisture is adequate in most areas.
  • Flea beetle damage reported. Cutworms seen between Holland, Trehern, Austin and MacGregor.
  • Post-emergent spraying has started.

Southeast and Red River Valley

  • Seeding is generally complete with cereal crop emergence good, some spottiness. Soybean emergence slow.
  • Potato germination is slow with some seed decay reported.
  • Flea beetle control taking place in early canola and mustard.
  • Pastures in good condition but delayed.
  • Post-emergent weed control underway.

Central and Interlake

  • Crop emergence is general. Some replacement of frost damaged early-seeded canola underway.
  • Fall seeded crops in poor to fair condition with weed control underway.
  • Pastures are generally good but delayed.
  • Flea beetles being controlled in canola.

Northwest

  • Seeding generally complete with overall emergence variable with patchiness.
  • Canola damaged by frost.
  • Fall seeded crops rated in fair condition.
  • Pastures and hay land in fair condition.
