A snapshot of harvest conditions and progress across the Prairies.

MANITOBA

Interlake, East

* In the Interlake, good weather returned to allow harvest to progress.

* Slight frost was experienced Sept. 21, with variable showers the next day.

* Sunflower desiccation is underway.

* Winter wheat, fall rye and perennial rye seeding continues.

* In the east, cereal harvest is complete, with yields from 40 to 50 bushels an acre.

* Quality is deteriorating from weathering and fusarium.

* Hay and pastures are good.

* Less winter wheat is being planted as farmers focus on harvesting and haying activities in good weather.

Central, Red River Valley

* Good harvest progress was reported.

* Quality is lower than expected on cereals. There is some sprouting and bleaching.

* Harvest of long-season crops is underway.

* Winter wheat is starting to emerge.

* Hay fields are in good shape as haying continues in good weather.

West

* In the south, there was spotty rainfall.

* Wheat remains the largest acreage yet to harvest.

* Canola yields and quality are average to above average.

* North of Highway 1, a large percentage of the barley harvested has sprouted and is of poor quality.

* Fusarium is an issue in wheat.

* Pastures are drying up, with feed shortages reported in the region.

* In the north, soil moisture ranges from full to good.

* Frost down to –3 C was reported, but not expected to cause damage.

* Fields are very wet around the Ste. Rose region.

* Canola is 70 percent harvested, with good yields and quality.

* Forage producers are taking off second cut alfalfa wherever possible.

SASKATCHEWAN

Central

* Good harvest progress reported.

* Showers and gusty winds reported around Saskatoon.

* Weathering issues are starting to show up in eastern crops.

North

* Hay crop is good in east but poorer in western regions.

* Slow maturing crops are hampering harvest progress.

* Weathering is evident in northern and western crops.

* Some smaller farms around Melfort are close to completion.

* Yields are very good.

* Good rainfall halted harvest Sept. 22.

South

* Rain up to 10 millimetres and hail fell over the Regina region, damaging standing and swathed crops.

* Combines were out in droves in good weather last week, with much of the harvest nearing completion.

* Poor hay crops are reported in pockets of southwestern areas.

* Showers slowed harvest in Langbank and Kennedy.

* Harvest completion reported on many farms at Assiniboia, Swift Current, Govan, Strasbourg, Liberty, Stalwart, Moose Jaw and Shaunavon.

ALBERTA

Peace, Northeast

* Canola is averaging 12 bu. an acre at one Fairview farm, which is an example of a wider problem.

* Dry conditions plaguing the region are producing poor forage crops.

* Frost was reported in parts of northern Alberta during the week, which has caused quality losses in immature crops.

Central

* Great harvest weather last week allowed farmers to get a lot of the crop harvested.

* There are reports of 125 bu. yields on barley in central areas, with high yields also observed on canola and wheat.

* Cooler than normal temperatures are slowing down maturation and drying.

South

* Widespread rain halted harvest.

* Rain across the southern durum growing areas stopped combining but did not cause deterioration in quality.

* Crops are maturing and drying slowly.
