MANITOBA

Interlake, East

South, Red River Valley

  • Warm weather returned without new precipitation through the weekend.
  • Canola stands are thin with little or no branching.
  • Leaf rust is showing up in cereals and bacterial blight is evident on soybeans.
  • Grasshoppers are increasing.
  • Haylands and pastures are good, with hay yields at 1.5 tonnes per acre and alfalfa/grass at 1.5 tonnes per acre.
  • Greenfeed cut is underway.

Western Manitoba

  • In the south, corn lags behind.
  • First cut hay is underway and yields are average to below average.
  • In the north, soil moisture is ideal to excessive.
  • Cereal leaf diseases are present.
  • Flower blasting is reported in canola due to hot, humid weather.
  • Corn in the northern parkland is behind.
  • Alfalfa weevil damage is reported in south Swan Valley.

SASKATCHEWAN

Central

  • A mixed weather picture included daytime temperatures in teens, 20s and 30s.
  • Rain reported in thunderstorms and showers, but the Battlefords area was missed and remains very dry.
  • High populations of wheat midge are reported.
  • Hay crop is short south of Saskatoon and east of Rosetown.
  • Alfalfa weevil reported at Ituna.

North

  • Scouting for wheat midge is underway, with high population numbers expected.
  • Crops are heading.
  • Rains helped moderately dry conditions.

South

  • Wheat midge is a concern.
  • Severe weather reported at Gravelbourg, Beechy and Lucky Lake, with some damage reported to crops at Ogema.

ALBERTA

Peace, Northeast

  • West Peace is very dry, while areas toward Manning are very wet.
  • Crops are burning up around Fairview, with flower blasting seen in canola due to heat.
  • Canola could rebound with rain, but wheat yield potential is set and harvest amounts will be down.
  • Rain showers are hit and miss in the zone.
  • Baling is underway and about 35 percent of haying is completed.

Central

  • Thunderstorms were reported around Edmonton.
  • Warm weather helped crops progress, with many fields of canola flowering.
  • Subsoil moisture is very good.
  • First cut hay is underway.
  • Poor hay tonnage coming off fields from Edmonton to the Saskatchewan border, where moisture conditions have deteriorated in recent days.

South

  • Tornado was sighted at Airdrie, with the storm system moving on to Acme and Beiseker.
  • Haying operations are in full swing under sunny skies, with good quality reported.
  • Subsoil moisture is good to excellent.
