MANITOBA

Interlake, East

  • Wet conditions from seven to 75 millimetres of rain are bordering on excessive across the entire northern region. Standing water and ruts are evident in many fields.
  • Fusarium could become an issue.
  • Haying is underway in some areas, with fair yields.
  • Pastures are rated fair to good.
  • Premature bolting is reported in canola under stress.
  • Septoria and tan spot are present.

South, Red River Valley

  • Potato crop is recovering from spring’s cool weather.

  • The dry area east of Red River was quenched with more than 35 mm of rain over the weekend.
  • No pest infestations are reported.
  • Haying began last week. Yields are lower than normal.
  • Morden reports first cut yields of up to three tonnes per acre.
  • Pastures are fair to good.
  • Dugout levels are adequate.

West

  • Five tornadoes were sighted over the weekend between Gladstone and Portage la Prairie, with some reports of localized damage.
  • Dauphin area received another 50 mm of rain last week.
  • Forage crops are fair to good. Haying is underway around Swan Valley and silage harvest began in the north Parkland.
  • Top-dressing of canola has begun in Swan River Valley.
  • Southwest could use more rain.
  • Tan spot, powdery mildew and septoria have been reported in wheat.

SASKATCHEWAN

Central

  • Hail reported at Vanscoy and funnel clouds sighted near Asquith.
  • Crops are catching up with good rain exceeding 50 mm.
  • Hay crop is short.
  • Peas faring better than most crops.
  • Spraying has wrapped up. Fungicide

applications expected in coming week.

North

  • More than 40 mm of rain fell at Leoville, where hay crops have suffered from little moisture.
  • Pastures are improving.
  • Good progress on all crops, although some fields touched by frost earlier are spindly.

South

  • Crops are delayed around Regina but progressing very well at Radville in good growing conditions.
  • Most rain fell from east of Regina toward the Manitoba border.

ALBERTA

Peace, Northeast

  • By Edmonton, crops look fairly good, but could use moisture after heat.
  • Hay looks good, swathing is underway on first cut.
  • Rain has been sporadic. Some regions are reporting excess moisture, while others are much drier.

Central

  • Winter wheat looks very good near Camrose.
  • Early spring wheat has headed out, peas are growing well.
  • Weather reports predict hot weather so plenty of hay is being cut.
  • By Three Hills, wheat is 10 days behind because of excess spring moisture.
  • Subsurface moisture is good.
  • Wheat midge is showing up. Grasshopper numbers are low. Gophers are plentiful and damaging the canola crop.
  • Peas look good and all crops are filling in.
  • By Castor, crops are generally good. Winter wheat is hit and miss, canola is delayed and just starting to flower.
  • Hay crop looks good, a second cut is very likely.
  • Everything is headed out early due to early cold, wet weather.

South

  • Crops look very good in the Cardston region. Timely rains have helped.
  • Winter wheat looks excellent and is beginning to head out.
  • Hay crops are in very good shape.
  • Most hay is down at Magrath, with

cutting underway at Cardston and Acadia

Valley.

  • Cereal crops are good with good subsoil moisture, although drying out on top.
  • Reports of serious gopher problems.
  • Lethbridge crops look good, with barley benefiting from cool weather earlier and corn now progressing in heat.
  • Sugar beets are doing well.
  • Spraying is underway.
  • Some winter triticale has been cut for silage, with hay down, baled or silaged.
  • Irrigation lines are active.
  • Pastures are in good shape.
