WCE sets record volume

SASKATOON (Staff) – A new record for volume of trade was set at the Winnipeg Commodity Exchange in 1995-96. The exchange topped its previous record set in 1993-94 by about seven percent.

Canola was the most traded crop with 1.27-million futures traded, an increase of 18 percent over last year.

The western feed barley futures contract saw strong interest at 256,480 trades, an increase of 69 percent over last year.

Feed wheat saw 181,383 trades, an increase of 15 percent, while flax dropped about 11 percent to 112,553 and the old oat contract fell 83 percent to just 7,998 trades. A new oat contract has been implemented for the 1996-97 crop year.

The new feed pea contract saw a total of 19,323 trades.
