The value of hog manure is rising even as its reputation suffers from its perceived role in contributing to water pollution.

The price of commercial granular phosphate fertilizer has doubled to $1,200 a tonne from about $600 last fall, making hog manure’s phosphate content more valuable.

Scott Dick, who operates Agra-Gold Consulting in Niverville, Man., said hog manure has become a hot commodity for grain farmers.

The value of manure has more than doubled since 2002.

Dick’s company services about 100 sites in the province.

“We’re now selling a lot more manure than we ever have before,” he said.

“It used to be that guys would say, ‘if you need my land, you can use it, but I won’t pay anything.’ ”
