SASKATOON (Staff) – New regulations covering oats grading should make it easier to sell oats to the U.S., says the Canadian Grain Commission.
The commission last week announced a series of changes to quality standards and grade specifications to take effect with the new crop year Aug. 1.
Under the new rules, the minimum test weight requirement is being increased for oat grades.
“U.S. customers had recommended increasing test weights to accommodate newer varieties that have thinner hulls,” the commissioner said in a press release.

The commission has also decided to establish oats grade specifications for large seeds.
Other changes announced last week by the commission, to take effect Aug. 1, include:
- For all six classes of Canada Western wheat, tolerance levels for shrunken and broken kernels will be brought into line with export tolerances for all milling grades.
- Primary elevator and export tolerance levels for other grains and other wheats will be harmonized for No. 2 CW red winter and No. 1 and 2 CW extra strong red spring.
- A new system for determining protein levels in grain will go into effect.
