It will be more than a week before a group of American cattle producers decides if it will appeal an anti-dumping suit against Canadian beef.
At a recent convention, delegates left the appeal decision to the directors, said John Lockie, head of the Ranchers-Cattlemen Action Legal Fund. R-CALF directors are to meet Feb. 14 to decide.
Lockie said the appeal will depend on timing and new legal issues that have arisen since American Department of Commerce officials scrutinized the Canadian cattle industry and declared it didn’t dump cattle into the United States below cost of production.
“It’s going to come down to timing and new information,” said Lockie of Columbus, Montana.
He said money would not be a factor in deciding whether to appeal. Its 15,000 members, 140 associate business members, and grants from states and state organizations funded the original case.
It cost the Canadian cattle industry more than $6 million to defend itself.
